Bandanna Shorts

Shorts for just five bucks! (And the thing hanging on the back of the chair - that's an apron I made out of a men's dress shirt! I'll post on that later.)

With scraps left over to play with.

I made these super simple shorts for Collin a couple of weeks ago. I was so excited because I had been planning on making them for over a year! I love to sew, but in reality, I don’t have a whole lot to show for it. So each time I finish a project, I always feel so accomplished and proud of myself. Easy as these were, I still felt so pleased to have done them. Collin loves them, and the 100% cotton is so light and airy – perfect for hot summer days. I plan on making a few more colors for him. And I’m hoping to make an A-line skirt for me. We’ll see how that goes. It’ll be my first, and I’m just hoping it’ll work with the bandannas. Here’s the pattern I used that you can print off. My pattern’s actually a little bit different as it is black and white and minus the kid illustrations and the like. Must be an earlier version. She also offers a step-by-step picture tutorial for the shorts here. I did these a bit differently in order to make sure they fit Collin. For instance, it says to cut the ‘J’ two inches in and ten inches down. But that wouldn’t have worked for Collin. I took a pair of shorts that fit him and used that ‘J’. And I used the length of his shorts as well. This made them fit perfectly and not be too long, nor too wide but with a fitted waist.

If you make them, let me know!

Garden Update: 1

Cherry Belle Radishes

These radishes are gone now.  Eaten up sliced thin on a piece of buttered bread sprinkled with salt. Delish! The second crop has already germinated and the third crop is planted. I think I’ll eat all of them on the buttered bread. It truly was tasty and Collin happily ate it up as well.  I have planted a few more loose leafed ‘Salad Bowl’ lettuce in their place. Look at me with a catch crop already in place!

Salad Bowl Lettuce

Thinned these guys. They’re looking good and healthy. Can’t wait to eat them in a salad! Let’s hope it doesn’t get too hot for them. Though it says they’re slow to bolt.

Red-Cored Chantenay Carrots

In this pic, the carrots are plentiful and thriving. Now, they’re still thriving, but not so plentiful. Thinned out 30(!) of them to leave behind just 11.  But I planted them as the package directed and thinned as directed as well. Felt bad killing out the poor fellas, but I suppose that’ll make the survivors all the more hearty.

Oregon Sugar Snap Peas

Can’t wait for these guys be ready for harvest! Oh sweet delicious peas from the vine. I found that metal contraption leaning on the fence in the backyard. Tied some string to it, and there you have it – a trellis! Hurray for up-cycling!

Onions

Look at these tall greenies ready for the eating – except the short few on the ends.  Going to be using some in tomorrow’s dinner. So satisfying a crop to grow with it’s quick return in produce. I used sets and they are so simple!  Down the line there are four white, four yellow, and four red onions that’ll hopefully get to a nice size.

Cut-and-Come-Again Lettuces: Mesclun Mix & Gourmet Blend Mix

I was so excited at the thought of the  cut-and-come-again idea, but have been a bit dissapointed with this crop. It’s planted in an old antique box and well, my dog dug out one side of it when they were just seeds. Plus, I’ve had a hard time watering them because they’re all close together and the water splasing on them flattens them to the soil and their edges get burned. I know I need to thin them, but it’ll leave so few, I think. I’ll just have to give it a go I guess, or I might end up with nothing.

Contender Bush Beans

Funny little beans with their big green leaves and halved seed shells. Plus the way they pop their necks out of the ground, then next thing there’s a big leafed tall bean standing so tall and proud.

Contender Bush Bean

I also have butterhead lettuce growing which I thinned recently. I decided to transplant four of the seedlings. They were doing so well, I just couldn’t see letting them not mature into a nice head of lettuce. But, they don’t seem to be to happy with being moved at the moment. Hopefully they’ll perk up in a few days.

Dug up a strip of ground for the herb garden and put in the first – a cutting of chives from my Mom. Mmmm chives!

So there’s my first veg garden update!  How does your garden grow?

Bringing the Outdoors In

I love this tree! This is no doubt apparent by the many pictures I have in the post of it – believe me, there are plenty more.  What a nice surprise to find we have this great big, beautiful blossoming tree! It is one of many flowering trees here at our house. I’m hoping there’ll be edible fruit on some of them. We shall see.

It’s been so nice when the weather allows us to eat outside. I want to be outside every chance we get. I mean, why not? I’m taking every advantage of once again having our own house, and trying to enjoy it to the fullest. I love spring!

Under Construction!

I’m making some changes to this blog. A bit of organizing. A bit of restructuring. A bit of this and that. Be back soon!

Spring Snow

Spring Buds Under Snow

Spring Buds Under Snow

Looked out the window to a winter wonderland in the springtime. It’s beautiful, and I know it won’t be around for long, so I can appreciate it a lot more than if it was in the dead of winter.  At 10Am it’s a freezing 32 degrees, but by this coming Sunday…it’ll be a blissful 70. Ah weather.

Halloween

Happy Halloween!  Collin and I decorated my Mom’s squash…

And here’s mine and Collin’s Jack-o-lantern (Thanks Christa!).

Collin and I had very home-grown costumes.  I was a colorful fairy, spring fairy, what have ya. Collin was obviously a ghost…obvious, right?  My mom and I sewed up some old t-shirts of Chase’s to make this ghostly creation.  (Yeah, up until its reincarnation, Chase was wearing that very holey shirt.)  The yellow skirt on me started out as a tanktop! (Thanks for your sewing expertise, Mother!)

Collin has LOVED Halloween.  Seriously.  We have watched Nightmare Before Christmas a million times (and counting).  He especially loves the songs from the movie.  He thinks the ghosts, witches, pumpkins, skeletons, and all are just jolly fun.

We took Collin trick-or-treating up and down my Mom’s street.  It was a bit of fun and Collin loved it.  He was such a cutie-pie!

Ready for a night out!  To Woody’s for some music by the Crafty Bastards.  Chase went last year (we didn’t dress up), but he was NOT interested in going again.  Luckily, he so kindly let me go, because I had a fun time!

See…me having fun.  I came to dance!

So Long…Snip Snip

Before I cut my hair.  Wow, eh?  I cut about 13 inches off and donated it.

Bye, bye long hair!

The concert was oh so fantastic!  Menomena was the opening band and wow, they were so intense and intriguing and talented.  I really enjoyed their performance!  And The National, well of course they were amazing!  It is always so great to see a band performing their songs live.  What a wonderful experience and opportunity!

Thanks to my super cool sister Linnet!  Lots of love to you!

Seattle 8 – Sights 4

An entrance into the International District

Linnet introduced us to the neatest “toys” at the International District.  They’re actually collectible toys that come in little boxes – about the size of those single serve cereals.  There are lots of different themed sets, but each one you get is a surprise.  So, for instance, you might have a set that is forest animals, but all the boxes are the same on the outside so you don’t know what you’re getting.  It’s part of the fun and excitement.  The toys are a mix of Asian and Western influence and are so detailed and interesting.  I want to complete my sets!  Oh look, there’s even a Flickr group dedicated to them.  Take a look and you’ll want to start collecting too!

Speaking of international, one of  my favorite meals while in Seattle was this Vietnamese soup called Pho (pronounced Fuh).  In Seattle, there are several Pho restaurants where that is pretty much all they serve.  So delicious.  So many layers of flavor and texture.  Wow.  No kidding, it’s the best!  I crave it all the time now and hope to take a crack at making it sometime.  Have you had this AMAZING soup?
